Fancy Corn Snakes originate from the fields and forests of the United States and require a moderately warm and humid environment. These coiled and colorful snakes are found throughout the southwestern and central United States and are docile in nature; making them a great choice for beginning snake owners. Learn more about these fascinating creatures, their behaviors, and how to care for them in the sections below.
Experience Level: Beginner
Expected Size: Corn snakes grow to 48-60 inches (122-152 cm).
Lifespan: Corn snakes live for approximately 18-23 years.
Habitat: Corn snakes should be housed individually.
Personality: Docile
Handling: Easy to handle.
Vet Assured: Pets purchased at PetSmart are part of our exclusive Vet Assured program, designed by PetSmart veterinarians to help improve the health and well-being of our pets. Our vendors meet a high standard in caring for pets and screening them for common illnesses, including Zoonotic diseases. This program also includes specific standards for in-store pet care.
The PetSmart Promise: If your pet becomes ill during the initial 14-day period, or if you’re not satisfied for any reason, PetSmart will gladly replace the pet or refund the purchase price.
Safety tips for you and your pet: 1. ALL ANIMALS can potentially carry viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases contagious to humans. 2. Thoroughly wash your hands with warm, soapy water before and after contact with any pet or its habitat. 3. Adults should assist children with hand washing after contact with a pet or its enclosure. 4. Use caution when handling pets, and remember they may bite or scratch, especially when stressed.
Feeding Instructions:
RODENTS: Feed your snake frozen mice or rats that been thawed. Hold the rodent with tons when offering it to your snake.
NOTE: Adult snakes may not feed for several weeks at a time.
WATER: A fresh, large, shallow dish for snakes to sip or soak in.
Housing:
Well-ventilated 20-gallon terrarium (larger for adults)
Screened lid
Daytime light and bulb
Heat lamp and bulb
Thermometer
Basking site beneath heat lamp
Reptile carpet bedding
Water dish (big enough for pet to soak in)
Hygrometer-thermometer
Plants and decor
Terrarium Set-Up:
House one snake in a terrarium that is at least 2/3 the length of the snake. Be sure to have a secured screen lid, as these snakes are notorious escape artists.
Line the bottom of the terrarium with reptile carpet or bedding. Remove droppings frequently, stir the bedding every other week and change monthly.
Snakes require a temperature gradient (cool side and warm side) in their habitats. Temperatures should vary between daytime and nighttime hours. Use either a light and/or heating pad/mat to provide a heat gradient. Use the temperature chart, opposite, as a guide.
Add two thermometers, one at each end of the habitat, and a hygrometer to measure humidity.
Mist your snake and habitat as needed to maintain humidity or use an automatic fogger.
Provide branches (artificial or live) for hiding and climbing, and add a rock or wood hiding place on the habitat’s cool side.
These snakes require no special lighting, but appropriate day/night cycle should be mimicked.
For more information, consult PetSmart’s “Reptile & Amphibian Heating & Lighting” and “Setting Up a Reptile or Amphibian Habitat’ Care Guides.

We recently purchased a baby fancy corn snake.
He’s about 13 inches long, clear eyes, successfully eats pinkies once a week, poops normally and has a sweet friendly disposition.

My daughter wanted a corn snake for her eighth birthday. We went in and were quickly able to get help and purchase the corn snake as well as other items for the snake. The snake has been awesome! The feedings have gone well and all done by my eight and four year old daughters. Overall, a great purchase! I’ll be going back for the younger one to also have a reptile.

I think you should tell people what morph, not just fancy. Also in the care section you didn’t tell them anything about lighting heating or not to hold them or stress them after feeding, this will make them regurgitate the food which is a waste of food and bad for your snake.

Not much to say other than these are good starter snakes and usually have placid temperaments. If you’ve never owned a snake before I say start with this species and then if you like it slowly work your way up to some of the more demanding species.

I would honestly never buy any animal from petsupplycanada. They keep their ball pythons in small cages and it’s very sad, the ball pythons are about 2 and 3 feet long, and they’re being kept in about 10 gallon tank…. I think you should really give directions on how to care for them. You did not give proper instructions about heating and lighting. You should never buy a heating rock, it will burn the snake. Give your snake a lamp instead. Keep a baby corn snake in a 20 gallon tank. Don’t handle them before feeding. feed the baby corn snakes once a week. don’t touch them when shedding…. All basic things you didn’t include. I think you should put the morph instead of just “fancy corn snake”. That name is quite boring for sales, and it isn’t accurate. I bought a snake here, had her for a week before she passed away. R.I.P Mina.

Corn snakes are not “communal”! They will compete for food and space even when there is plenty. They are also often un-gendered which may lead to an unwanted clutch, or an egg bound snake. Even if you get luck and have two of the same gender, they will still fight and cause each other harm. DO NOT COHABITATE CORN SNAKES!

The price was reasonable and they had everything else I needed for the little danger noodle. I would absolutely recommend and/or buy another animal from this store.

Active and healthy, at first I didn’t know if was a pet snake was for me, but just seeing just how cute and friendly she was at pet smart, I just couldn’t resist. But She tends to act differently toward my cat Bernard. I know she can’t hurt him, but I keep her away from him just in case.

I bought a red albino corn snake and was feeding him in the tub. He went down the drain which unfortunately was left open. So I bought another one a grey corn snake. Then a couple days later my red snake came back up the drain, so now I have two babies!!!!!!! They do not bite and mine just curl up around my fingers and cuddle. They are super sweet and adorable!!!!!! If you want the friendliest sweetest snake get one or even two of these babies!!!!!!!

R.I.P Mina.

I think you should tell people what morph, not just fancy. Also in the care section you didn’t tell them anything about lighting heating or not to hold them or stress them after feeding, this will make them regurgitate the food which is a waste of food and bad for your snake.

Got my pet snake Elizabeth 2 months ago. She just has been a joy to have. Active and healthy, at first I didn’t know if was a pet snake was for me, but just seeing just how cute and friendly she was at pet smart, I just couldn’t resist. But She tends to act differently toward my cat Bernard. I know she can’t hurt him, but I keep her away from him just in case.

Not much to say other than these are good starter snakes and usually have placid temperaments. If you’ve never owned a snake before I say start with this species and then if you like it slowly work your way up to some of the more demanding species.

Snake people are weird. I like that someone has registered ‘sweet disposition ‘ from their snake, but it’s just lost on me. I like dogs.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got my Fancy Cornsnake/Snow Cornsnake from petsupplycanada a few months ago! She ate on the very first week, is a very calm and easy snake! I have been keeping Cornsnake for 10 years now and she is my favorite!

Love my beautiful fancy corn snake, but be careful. Mine escaped out of his very secure cage. Hatchlings are notorious for that!
