This bay has been hit or miss for a while now.. seems every other bag is more like dry grass..and petsupplycanada staff gave me grief over returning a bag that was terrible. Stuck with a bag of “grass” now!
Meg Fink (verified owner) –
I bought this to donate to the animals I hope they like it
Andrea73 (verified owner) –
The bags do not seem consistent. Sometimes its soft rather than crunchy, but this time the pieces were so short they fell right out of the hay feeder and are basically wasted. Alot of the pieces were more or less dust and therefore wasted. Recommended only because of its reputation overall.
Pigmom (verified owner) –
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have 3 guinea pigs and they love this hay! Also you get SO much in one bag compared to other brands I’ve used. I even got a free gift inside! Guinea pig mom approved!
Ms Alex (verified owner) –
My piggies love it but it’s a little to pricey….
Naccpiggies (verified owner) –
I bought this for our Guinea pigs. They both run out as soon as they hear the bin open.
Beth B (verified owner) –
Quality was poor for both bags. One was softer and tangled, but had mostly brown dead pieces. The other was much firmer, but yellow like straw. The rabbits at our rescue won’t eat any. Oxbow seems to be inconsistent with quality at the moment, so I’m wondering if they might be struggling due to some not so great weather. I hope it gets better in the future, as they used to be very good in terms of quality. Summer or fall stock might be better.
Piggiemom (verified owner) –
The piggies love it and eat so much. This product is exactly what they need daily.
BunnyDash (verified owner) –
I bought two 90 oz bags and they could not be anymore different. The first was very grassy but we were able to use it all. The second bag is like thick yellow straw and I honestly don’t think it’s usable. Very disappointed, as I never had problems before!
Marie 46 (verified owner) –
The bag is full of tiny pieces and not sure how an animal can eat it. It’s so dusty
Tori (verified owner) –
My rabbits been eating this hay for a year, and she loves it!
Betty1212 (verified owner) –
Had to return it since my bunny wouldn’t touch it.
Psarnovsky (verified owner) –
Really disappointed in Oxbow’s Timothy hay. My last three bags were awful, dry and brittle. So much waste as my guinea pig riffles through it and kicks all the bad hay out! Rumor is Oxbow sold out and now product is not same quality!
Danie44 (verified owner) –
This hay is horrible. It is extremely dry. So dry, I have cut my fingers taking it out. And my guinea pigs do not like it. They’ll eat some, but end up wasting most of it on the bottom of the cage.
Sharry (verified owner) –
I keep finding pieces of plastic inside , I was shocked! They are in random bags !
Hollygirl (verified owner) –
My 3 guinea pigs won’t touch this! They pick through and eat maybe 10-15 percent of it and the rest they use as litter!
Twodown4 (verified owner) –
A staple for our pets. The guineas jump in the bin as soon as I add new hay. And the large size comes with a chew toy inside which was a fun surprise the first time I opened it.
Arnie M (verified owner) –
The timothy hay lately has been FILLED with disgusting brown dried out pieces. Literally 70% of each bag. My pet wont eat most of this trash so it’s wasted money. I called oxbow they said they would get back to me never did. They lied they would look into it, never did. They are cheating liars. I called back again they promised a manager would call me back. NEVER DID YOU LIARS> I would not recommend this irresponsible company.
YvonneTrenton (verified owner) –
My bunnies prefer this brand. I would have given four and a half stars if able to. Sometimes the hay is too short and dusty but the two bags I got are fine. I haven’t opened the two new ones I added later which look greener. The first bag I opened smelled very fresh and had a good variety of seed heads vs long stems in it. Bunnies like it this that is the seal of approval. Still too expensive, but thankfully got this batch on sale. Bought multiple bags.
KFR10 (verified owner) –
Hay is always fresh and my guinea pigs love it. Oxbow hay and food was the brand our vet recommended to us for our guinea pigs.
YvonneTrenton (verified owner) –
Oxbow generally has good quality hay, but the 90 oz bag is full of shirt pieces of hay instead of long pieces. There are also very little seed heads. Disappointed in this particular purchase. I’m sure it is still edible but my bunnies prefer either a different cut or longer hay to munch on.
bundad (verified owner) –
I seems to be hard to get a good bale that doesn’t have a bunch of finely ground hay in the middle of the bale. while some of this is to be expected it seems to have become more of a regular pattern over the past year or two. Some have a bit less, some have a bunch more. Not sure why this is occurring but will likely start looking for another hay product unfortunately
Guinea Pig Parent (verified owner) –
I’ve received several sealed bags of hay from oxbow now that have had dead rodents in them. I’m not going to continue to expose my small animals to the potential disease from this hay and neither should you…. Especially when there are companies that sell hay without such problems.
Lynnzoo (verified owner) –
My guinea pigs eat tons of this. They seem to like it more than food.
Alistastuff (verified owner) –
Been buying oxbow for years. Worth every penny. Chinchillas love it.
Pony (verified owner) –
My Bunny loves this, It’s best for babies. I mix a little with the Timothy hay
dan8 (verified owner) –
bought this and very upset my bunny wont eat any of it at all. the HAY is EXTREMELY DRY like straw basket. complete waste!! now have to go to the store to see if able to get refund or replacement. came with a hole on the bag too, maby that explains it.
Nancy (verified owner) –
It’s not the products I’m the reviewing it’s your website! Every single time there is something wrong with my password or user name! You would think it would remember me but it doesnt… I can’t be the only one this happens to! So although you’re just around the corner Im done taking an hour or more dealing with your hot mess! No, seriously it’s not me! It’s youuuuu!
Crystal (verified owner) –
Always buy this hay for my guinea pig. She loves this brand of hay.
Chen (verified owner) –
I bought 2 bags as it was on sales envent. Compared with the previous bag, the quality of this batch is poor. Not green, not well dried, too much stem and brown chippings…
K marie (verified owner) –
I always buy this one but today this bag was tiny pieces of hay and my pet is eating dust. Not happy
Mandyyy (verified owner) –
My Netherland Dwarf rabbit doesn’t eat it that much, she just pulls them out from the rack for her bedding… She consumes maybe 30% of the Hay. If I feed her Orchard Hay she will eat 80%. I wish there is second cut or third cut Timothy Hay I can buy from the pet store.
Kels89 (verified owner) –
Gray old trash hay my Guinea pigs wouldn’t eat it!
danygirl1705 (verified owner) –
the hay is all soggy and full of dust, It looks like garbage
Love animals (verified owner) –
My Guinea pig loves this product. Goes though it a lot.
Big Time (verified owner) –
I have favored Oxbow over the other brand hay, but considering going back to the “other guys.” The quality of Oxbow has gone down. I”m unhappy with paying a high price for dust, stringy, and dried out hay. Lately, I have digging through the bag to search for edible and decent hay straws for my piggies. This shouldn’t be the case when you’re supposedly purchasing quality Timothy hay. It seems I have similar concerns based on other reviews. Oxbow, please go back to the quality brand I once loved for.my babies.
Connie (verified owner) –
Great quality and great price. My piggie won’t eat any other brand!
Anonymous (verified owner) –
I usually buy from chewy a 50lb box but I was low so I had to get some for my guinea pigs
Denis147 (verified owner) –
Great product birds love it, affordable and always available in my petsupplycanada
Mari (verified owner) –
Caused me allergies due to dust. Made me sick for months.
Anonymous (verified owner) –
Every bag smells fresh and I’ve never had a quality issue, this is the only jay I buy my rabbits
Tricia M (verified owner) –
I have used other brands of hay and many have a lot of bits and powder which the bunnies won’t eat. This brand has a lot of full pieces which has been great for my bunnies.
Kreygore (verified owner) –
Once good quality. Last 10 bags have been stale, dry and no berries. Sometimes looks like it came out of my lawnmower bag.
Debbie1428 (verified owner) –
This was a disappointment purchase. It’s not hay its more like tumble weeds in the bag. It’s the usual hay that we buy but this bag is really bad. It comes out in like a ball and there is absolutely no fuzzy in the and its extremely dry and brown our guinea pig is refusing to eat and the way it looks don’t blame him. It was a waste of 34.00 dollars.
Ziggysdude (verified owner) –
He came with it when I bought it and my guinea pig just kept eating it. He ate it so fast I had to refill it constantly. Ziggy approves!
Fatima123 (verified owner) –
What’s up with ridiculous increases in hay prices??
Sesame (verified owner) –
This is consistently much better and fresher than other brands. My guinea pig can tell the difference and so can I by smell and color and quality.
bunbun marshmallo (verified owner) –
I only bought this brand since they ran out of other brand that I usually buy. The hardest bag of hay to pull out for my bunnies! Also found a little silk worm in it which I’ve never experienced with store bought hay. Would not recommend nor buy again.
Hayedup (verified owner) –
The last 6 bags seem to have more straw in them than the past bags. This may be due to the area in which these fields of Timothy hay were grown and when it was harvested.
Bunny13 (verified owner) –
Bunnies loved it, they go crazy for it each time I buy it
SymonneG (verified owner) –
My rabbit used to nearly eat all of this hay. Now it is mostly stringy brown pieces she will not even touch. The hay is not as thick as before. It’s small slivers, and the pieces that had the bushel at the top are almost non existent. Horrible quality change for the same price. It’s ridiculous. More than half the bag is not used, and ends as bedding. Honestly will be switching brands, I’ve bought this several times since the switch hoping it was a case of bad batches. Now that I have moved cities and it is still garbage, I cannot recommend this to anyone. The reduced bagging originally kept the same quality, but the quality has definitely gone down.
Jeannie P (verified owner) –
Used to love this hay. Not so much anymore. It’s packed so tight, the hay breaks when trying to pull it out. Full of dust, which is terrible for rabbits respiratory system.
Brieg (verified owner) –
Love oxbow almost always a high quality product. The bunny is obsessed
Mom4rabbits (verified owner) –
I bought this for my rabbits, they really like this brand.
SkibidiMeowMeow (verified owner) –
Not suitable for hamsters. My hamster didnt care for it. Its too pokey for them. I tried crushing it to make it softer but ended up poking myself a lot. Don’t buy, it can hurt their eyes.
Blonergan (verified owner) –
This hay was old and it was sub-standard. Not as good as in the past!
Debinski (verified owner) –
Was ok a lot of brown tho atheist got a good price on sake
169494 (verified owner) –
My rabbit don’t really like this hay. She pulls all the hay out and then being very picky about the few hays in there that she wants to eat…. This hay is also super tightly packed and gives me splinters everytime, so i ended up with gloves when feeding my rabbit hays…
Bunny rabbits (verified owner) –
It was hard to get out of the bag but my rabbit loves it
llps (verified owner) –
I bought Oxbow Timmothy Hay for over 10 years along Oxbow Pellets but the new packaging is horrible. The hay is so compressed you can’t get a handful, you get slivers and scratches trying to pull out hay, the long strands are now short and broken and most of it falls thru the hay rack and ends up at the bottom of the letter box. I think Oxbow wants you to think they changed packaging to be more environmentally friendly but I think they are using the scraps of leftover hay that’s broken and shredded and hiding it in these new bags..
SueB (verified owner) –
I have three guinea pigs who love timothy hay and buying small bags gets expensive fast. The large box is not always as well sorted, I waste some, but overall it is a great bargain.
BillT (verified owner) –
My bunny didn’t seem to like the Western as much as the other Timothy hay by Oxbow.
LolaTheLop (verified owner) –
I have never found any bugs or anything in this hay but I would recommend that you look through it before giving it to your pet. Either than that my bunny loves it!
M and S (verified owner) –
I buy this for my rabbits all the time. It is generally a good product, however, I find a great discrepancy in the quality of the hay from bag to bag. Sometimes it is beautiful lush tender green Timothy. Other times it has a lot of brown grassy dry content and sometimes a lot of very coarse long tough stem content.
The rabbits will eat neither the dry grass or the coarse stalks. This unwanted content has to be thrown out which is a big waste given the cost.
Cpaul (verified owner) –
Lots of pink pick..straw really dry..probably from third cuts
Vicky77 (verified owner) –
I used to buy this brand for my guinea pigs. However, the quality is not stable. Sometimes they are ok but sometimes really bad. those i recently bought are all yellow with wired smell. My guinea pig don’t even touch it. Waste of my money.
willie4 (verified owner) –
The last two times I purchased this product it was quite good quality. Four times before that, it was not so great. Need more buds in the hay. That’s my bunnie’s favorite part.
Ms cecilia (verified owner) –
Im disappointed the hay is mostly dried and my rabbit does not want to eat it
RobinJ (verified owner) –
This was always my go to along with every other bun owner i know but i dont know WHAT is going on since they changed their packaging. Not only is it painful and impossible to get out of the bag, it has become the poorest quality of hay, it is practically dust and withered tiny pieces. I even came to look for reviews because i knew it couldnt just be me experiencing this and turns out i was correct. They need to get this back on track because i dont feel comfortable feeding this to my rabbit anymore.
PiggieMom (verified owner) –
My guinea pigs always love their hay
ShelleyH (verified owner) –
I stopped buying Oxbow Timothy hay several months ago because the quality drastically declined. It was thick dry hay, with at least 1/3 rd being unusable bits and dust. I am happy to say my most recent purchase was MUCH better, but still not rhe same quality as I once purchased.
Toriiii (verified owner) –
I’ve been a loyal customer of this brand for a long time and have always trusted it for my bunnies. The quality was consistently great, and I never had any issues—my bunnies loved it!
Piggiema (verified owner) –
I always order this Hay for my Guinea pigs but this time around the quality of hay was different and TERRIBLE. It looks like grass clippings and the pigs won’t touch it.
OdetteNat (verified owner) –
My bunnies love this hay and it’s great quality as well!
Piggie Lover 222 (verified owner) –
I have always been happy with Oxbow products. I was buying a different brand of hay for my guinea pig, but I decided to try Oxbow’s Timothy Hay. The difference in quality was immediately apparent, and my guinea pig eats it enthusiastically.
TwoRmoreFun (verified owner) –
Purchased on the 11th for bunnies to many broken pieces of hay no long strands that the bunnies can enjoy because they are broken does not stay in feeder falls through.
Fufu (verified owner) –
This is the only hay by bunny will eat but when Oxbow came out with their new packaging, it seems like the quality of the hay changed as well (and not for the better). Also, I don’t know if there is a new packaging process but the hay is a nightmare to take out of the bag now. It is so tightly packed into the bag and I have gotten splinters every single time I try to feed my bunny… it is extremely frustrating!!! Making a trip to petsupplycanada tomorrow and will definitely be looking for an alternative.
Guinea Pig Lover (verified owner) –
My guinea pigs will only eat the tender stalks of this Timothy Hay. It is expensive and a lot of it goes to waste. I was buying the smaller bags of Oxbow timothy hay and thought maybe this would be better, but it is the same.
Ja22 (verified owner) –
I usually buy this brand for the quality and how green it is but this time it was a bit yellow compared to what I am used to buying. It’s a different cut but it’s the same type of hay.
ELEL (verified owner) –
Bought this for my Guinea pig. She loves. Hope to keep in stock when order it again.
Sandee (verified owner) –
I bought this hay about 3 times and I was disappointed every time. 1 bag had almost no long pieces of hay, very small chopped up pieces with barely any heads. The second bag I bought was too yellow, and the 3rd bag I bought was nothing but stringy brown hay. My bunny wasn’t crazy about it. I do not recommend.
milo2 (verified owner) –
i buy this all the time it is pretty dusty at the bottom my bunny likes it.
Mitchie65 (verified owner) –
The product itself is great and I have been feeding it to our piggies for 4 years. Unfortunately the hay has been placed in new packaging. The same amount is compressed into much small packaging. I assume this is for shipping and reduces package waste which I am all for. Unfortunately this crushes at least a 1/3 of the hay and the pigs won’t eat. It is very hard to handle as well, since it is so tighly compressed. I wish I could find an alternative.
Eugene (verified owner) –
Full of scraps and hard stalks. Do not waste your money.
Dan Pep (verified owner) –
Our bunny, loves oxbow Timothy hay. Bought two bags since there was a salmon.
Denise (verified owner) –
I buy this every couple weeks and lately it’s all straw and my guinea pigs do not eat it, such a waste in the 90oz full bag. I will be switching to another brand.
wabbit (verified owner) –
I’ve been using Oxbow for years and years for my bunny. Unfortunately in the last little while, the quality had really gone downhill – these days, Oxbow bags are filled with more grass and dust than hay. There was a bag I purchased in the last 6 months that was pretty much entirely unusable because it was just full of grass, but I also couldn’t return it because I had already opened. Such a waste of my money, and these bags are not cheap! I’ll be looking for a new brand of hay to purchase for my next batch.
Fluffy bunny 20022 (verified owner) –
It used to be very fresh but this one time was totally dry and bunny totally rejected it
Rumble fish (verified owner) –
I found cactus bits in my Timothy hay, This happened twice with this product I Purchased it from petsupplycanada in Ancaster# I return the first bag with dried up cactus bits all over inside I was horrified but I thought I’d try it again I bought another one same thing happened just a little bit halfway through the bag I was so worried what could this do to my guinea pigs eating all of these cactus and cactus needles and when I brought it to their attention the people working there they seem not to care and I said my guinea pig better not die because of this I’m so angry I’ll never buy this product again I found online farms to buy from nearby me thank God for that!!…
RubytheBunny (verified owner) –
I used to buy Oxbow Timothy hay all the time (in 90OZ). however, ever since they changed the packaging to make it smaller, there is way more dust in the bag and tiny broken bits of hay that are basically useless. I have stopped buying from oxbow and started buying in bulk from feed stores and farms instead, which is way healthier for my bunny’s teeth.
Mom516 (verified owner) –
My daughter purchased this hay for her guinea pigs & after giving her piggies fresh hay found a tick on her leg. Extremely disappointed & it scared her!! We checked all our animals & didn’t find any ticks on them, thankfully!
GizBiz (verified owner) –
Very happy with the Oxbow Timothy Hay. We have tried other brands and our rabbit does not seem to like them. She loves the Oxbow. Will continue buying.
Guineamom (verified owner) –
I’ve been using this hay for awhile without issue but this last batch is horrible. It smells astringent and has unrecognizable foliage in it. There’s thick purple stems, a bunch of weird almost fir-like dried stems, and some strange feather-like plant. Most of the bag is made up of strange plants and compressed clippings. It is very dusty. Quality control must be at an all time low.
PiggieMom81 (verified owner) –
You either get extremely powdery or so hard my guinea pigs avoid it. Very seldom I get a good bag of hay. I will be looking for a new brand
Nichole (verified owner) –
I’ve purchased this brand of hay for the past 3 years and recently the quality has been awful. Very difficult to get out lots of loose fine pieces squeezed in the bag. It doesn’t do well for insulation much less food they need because of the poor quality. I’ve contacted oxbo directly with no response.
Piggy Slave (verified owner) –
I have two piggies and they have been eating this for awhile loving it. However, recently with the change in packaging they toss 60% of the hay out refusing to eat it. I recently bought two bags of the 90 oz hay. I’ve only opened one and the hay seems to be full of scraps, hard stalks, yellow and doesn’t have that fresh hay smell.
maiya (verified owner) –
it is rly hard to get out with the 90 oz bag but my guinea pigs love it they eat it all the time
Sandicat (verified owner) –
My guinea pigs would not eat it because it is brown and old. They like fresher hay.
