I must preface this review by stating that we adopted a rescue dog that has already been crate trained……We have had it about a week and left her in it twice without any issues. We put some treats in there along with her bone to chew on. Both times we left her in it about 2 hours. She was anxious to see us but she was fine. Our dog weighs about 37lb.
RebaMia (verified owner) –
I used this cage twice for my Australian shepherd, when I came home she had broken the locking mechanism and broken through a large section of the plastic cage.
Bob Weiler (verified owner) –
Crate does not match the dimensions advertised. I had to return it and buy a larger crate. Several inches of the advertised size.
Cheap defective (verified owner) –
This product is cheap and defective. The door does not stay locked. I wrote the company and instead of owning up to the cheap, defective product, they blamed my dog for having anxiety. No where did I ever stay anything about my dog nor his behavior. The dog just goes in and sleeps in the crate. I’m always by him. I have never left him alone in this crate. His butt bumps against it when he’s sleeping and the door pops open. 7 times. Twice while we were outside. He could have ran away but thankfully ran straight to mommy. The cover on the outside fell off. The company even blamed my dogs anxiety for that. The dog wasn’t in the crate nor near the crate when it just fell off. My dog later cut his ear bad on the defective door. I had to stop using the crate.
my dog doesn’t have anxiety at all. He just sleeps all the time. He’s a puppy. If he had anxiety wouldn’t the crate be all scratched up? I even sent them this picture which is where out of nowhere they blamed the dog for anxiety. Other reviewer on their site got a replacement door when they complained about the same defective problem.

Bought this to transport dog via air cargo. Held up well.
FosterDogMom3 (verified owner) –
I bought this a few days ago & I’m very happy I did! I have 2 of my own dogs (golden retriever & a shepherd mix) and we also foster dogs with a local rescue. We also just bought a new van, so I knew I wanted something to not only keep the dogs safe when transporting, but also maintain a clean interior. I stored the 60 portion of the 60/40 3rd row & it fits perfectly. Assembly was very easy.
Kaggie16 (verified owner) –
Heavy duty enough yet light enough to travel with. I bought this for my small Cavapoo pup and we have been on the go since we picked him up. It has become his safe space when we are on our adventures, and he puts himself to bed in the crate at home. It’s a little oversized but I did that on purpose because we travel so often and it doubles as his bed. Online sources said don’t do that so your pet doesn’t have room to go potty in the crate, but something to consider when trying to figure out the size you get.

This works great for teaching my 11 wk old puppy “crate time is night time”
Dalji (verified owner) –
My puppies love their big girl crates. They were almost growing out of their other crates so it was time to get big girl crates.
Justus92 (verified owner) –
I bought this for taking my macaw to the vet. I know that she can break the plastic sides but she is only in it while I am watching her so for my purposes it works well enough. I highly doubt it would keep a large dog in.
BKFK (verified owner) –
Basic sturdy easy to assemble easy to use. Love it.
Bama61 (verified owner) –
My pup really likes his new kennel!
No problem with him getting in and out!
MountainCurr (verified owner) –
Bought it in store with our dog and they said it was the right size for him. He easily opened the door. I now see how many other reviews report the same thing. Very disappointed
Ginn (verified owner) –
My GSD pup is crate trained. I purchased my first PetMate plastic crate in 2004 and never had an issue. When my GSD got too big for his wire kennel, I upgraded the size and got a PetMate Ultra (for its airline approved status). For three solid nights and any day time crate use highly distressed my dog. No one in the house slept. He was quite agitated (barking, clawing at the crate bottom, etc). He could not sleep or lay down in the crate. On the fourth night, I put him in the crate with the same result. Ten minutes later, I took out the old 2004 crate (flat bottom, no injection mold markers) and popped him in it. He sat down and gave the biggest sigh. I finally understood he had been in distress because of the new crate. On inspection, I discovered these round things under the bottom, pressed into them with my forearms and immediately felt the pressure points/pain.
Who thought this design was a good idea? Did PetMate even try it? I beg designers to sit in it, lie down in it, press their forearms on to these circle things. Question your motives.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s a cheap excuse and terrible quality.
Brindo (verified owner) –
My only regret is not going down one size because the cage is an ugly eye3 soar in the house. Our pet loved this and we have taken this apart and put it back togather several times. I don’t know if it is possible for a pet to damage the door or if we got luck but the quality is very good after 3 years.
Stu72 (verified owner) –
Perfect size, strongly built, and door latch easy to operate. My sheltie loves it and I am very happy with my choice.
Smits23 (verified owner) –
This was such a waste of money! Our dog broke the latch and broke out of the crate the first time we used it. We spent $203 on this crate and I so wish we could get that money back. If there’s any chance of your dog trying to get out of a crate, do not buy! It is money thrown away.
BoxerCushion (verified owner) –
If I had more time, I probably would’ve shopped around because when my dog was a smaller puppy, I purchased a similar crate in the next size down for 1/3 of the price on that major online web store that starts with an A. Pretty sure I could’ve gotten this at about 2/3 of the price there – not so much of a complaint as a reality. If cost matters, then shop around. Otherwise, I was very glad they had this kind in stock because their competitor did not in-store and it was needed today not in a few days. Takes a minute to put together- you’d have to be pretty challenged to not be able to figure this out without instructions. They also separately sell good pads with removable washable covers to fit. I will add that over the past 30 years or more I have raised multiple dogs and traveled with them extensively and this is the kind of crate that you need to travel. The wire crates are suitable for in your home or at your destinations, but not in between. Therefore, it’s disappointing that they are making these a little bit thinner than they used to in the past. It’s obvious to anyone who has had one before and for me it would be a concern if I was going to say ship, my dog on an airplane. If so get the heaviest, hardest crate available. For less extreme travel or household use it’s fine.
Anonymous (verified owner) –
It did not come with a handle on top, as shown in the picture. I don’t know if this one is defective or not. The one I got was the only one in stock in the area.
GatorGirlFan (verified owner) –
Been using it for 5 days and no problems. After reading other reviews about the latch, been extra careful to not pull hard when opening. It’s the perfect size for our 21 lb miniature goldendoodle. Would’ve been nice to have a handle on top just so maneuvering it around (empty) from room to room is easier. Decided to use a travel crate instead of the wire crate just because of the rattling noise wire crates make when the dog moves around; especially if used in the bedroom at night.
Caharp (verified owner) –
Thought the crate would do the job and it did for a few weeks, then the latch came off and my dog managed to escape this morning, this crates to expensive to keep buying, I’d like a new door…it did well up until this happened…and basically a brand new crate maybe 3 weeks old…
Dejesus (verified owner) –
I agree with the rest of the reviews, the door broke after a few days of use. It was also recommended to us by an associate and was very expensive. I understand the weight and size for the crate are not to keep a dog in but when there are this many bad reviews there is a design flaw that needs to be changed.
PSbilly (verified owner) –
Had the similar model well over 10 years old that had cracked on the top, probably from me leaning on the top, for our last beagle pup. Brought and purchased a larger metal cage that our beagle bent and gnawed the metal out of shape on the gate. Purchased this kennel and she has not damaged to date (2 months) when we crate her to go out. Prefer the grey colour, to the previous beige colour.
Jake2022 (verified owner) –
I bought this kennel explicitly for Jake’s traveling comfort for a cross-country trek from Texas to Alaska. He had more than enough room to stand, stretch or lie down. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is the lack of a handle. Although not heavy it’s size made it awkward for me as a solo traveler to move around. I added casters to alleviate that problem.
Cvee (verified owner) –
Works, no issues, and made in USA using recycled materials.
trish 19 (verified owner) –
I love that it has the guards at the bottom and top of the door so that the dog can not push or pull them that is how our dog was escaping and then bending it up to escape. Our new dog Murphy is a rescue and needed to be kenneled because we cant trust him alone and thankfully he doesn’t have to be kenneled for only 4.5 hours so not the long works great for us.
Bear7272 (verified owner) –
I bought this 2 weeks ago and our toy poodle has no issues going inside. Quality construction’
Drea240 (verified owner) –
Door and latch are cheaply constructed. My dog escapes by opening the door within 5 minutes of being put into it. Complete waste of money.
Betd218 (verified owner) –
I got this crate because it looked to be a little more heavy duty and my dog is an anxious chewer. This is day two of using it and my dog has already chewed a hole through the literal bottom of the crate. Too many protruding pieces on the inside for a dog to get their teeth around. Dangerous for the dog once they get a piece of it (I came home to little blood spots on the floor from her gums getting scraped).
Buffie123 (verified owner) –
The trainer for our rambuncious 3 yr old Airedale said get a crate. If he was a puppy, great idea, but he has had free rein for 3 years and I would not physically put him in this very nice crate. We tried treats and made it comfy. He would have nothing to do with it so after two weeks, back it went. Great for a new puppy, although this is very large for a puppy. It really is great and will hose iff if needed. It goes together easily.
Frenchie Parent (verified owner) –
This crate is the perfect size for air travel with your fur babies. It is a good sturdy crate.
TwoBlueDeafEyes (verified owner) –
N/A….. I bought this a month ago and am happy that I did…..
3Arrows (verified owner) –
My dog bumped the latch once and it fell apart. It’s not strong at all and cheaply made. You can put the prongs back together but the latch cover just falls off again. This crate is only appropriate for an already crate trained animal, not one in training.
Candyman11 (verified owner) –
Crate is easy to assemble. No tools required. Once put together it’s very sturdy with a secure door.
Amber B (verified owner) –
Purchased these based on the pictures for travel with my dogs. Unfortunately, it’s a little misleading because the larger crates do not have handles or hand holds (requirements for most crated dogs traveling on an airline). I will now have to try and sale these to recoup some of the funds. Very disappointing. The packaging does not allow for you to see that there are no handles until you get them home and put together.
scm22 (verified owner) –
Dangerous to our pet! On the first use of this product, our pitbull chewed on the plastic bumper that keeps the door from opening inward. The flimsy piece of plastic easily bent and punctured, allowing our dog to cut herself on it! We expected a higher quality, better-designed item given the price and the fact that it’s advertised as being both “heavy duty” and “good for training.” Now this $100+ kennel is completely useless.
Chris111 (verified owner) –
We have a 25 pound Chihuahua mix, which is why we got the oversized 25-40 or 50 pound carrier. The first time we used it, I was bringing the “little” one home from surgery, but cracked as I lifted it! One of the vet techs heard and helped me carry her, from the side, to the car.
MyDogsNameIsPenny (verified owner) –
I was skeptical about this crate after reading the low star ratings because they were specifically due to their dogs being able to break them. My dog is a 60lb chocolate lab with separation anxiety and I bought this crate because she chewed holes in her metal wire cage, she chewed the holes because I had to reinforce the corners with zip ties after she escaped multiple times. This crate is compact which I think helps limit her ability to get enough momentum/force to do more damage than just chewing the top plastic part. (I’m going to file it down so it isn’t sharp.) If you’re considering this crate to buy I recommend taking the time to measure your dog and make sure you’re comfortable with the size. Also, I’m unsure about the “why” but I am pleasantly surprised that my dog doesn’t bark as much in this crate compared to the wire cage she had before. I think the compact style makes a difference with her separation anxiety – which I didn’t even think of before buying because I was only concerned with durability.
Elsa Mack (verified owner) –
My dog broke the latch on this crate the first time I put her in it. This is the second kennel I’ve bought that my dog has been able to break out of easily. So far I’ve spent $250 on kennels that are pretty useless for actually containing a dog.

I walked into petsupplycanada just looking at crates..I wish I had gotten her name but I didn’t..I approached someone wearing the petsupplycanada tag..she could not have been nicer or more helpful..I’m so glad I boight this, my dog took to it immediately…
ReviewTime (verified owner) –
This dog kennel will need a dog bed or some kind of padded for the bottom. This has comes with no carry handle. There’s a spot for one but it doesn’t come with one. My rescue dog stayed in this for one night and prefers the floor. That’s just the dog’s preference. All dogs have their own taste. The price could have been a lot cheaper. I feel it was a little high priced for the size. Other than that. It’s got a nice look to it. Bars on the windows. And secured with little bolts you put plastic twist things on. This would be good for rescuing dogs but wouldn’t say permanent place to sleep. Maybe a good training crate. Look for better pricing. All in all it’s good.

My 7 month old Standard poodle is relaxed in his new kennel
Branaban1968 (verified owner) –
I purchased two of these separately. My larger dog likes it better than the wire crate as it affords her more privacy. The other was purchased for our newly adopted bonded older small dogs as both can comfortably fit in this larger size crate for when we are not at home (which is rare). I highly recommend this airline crate for a single medium to large dog or for two smaller dogs.
Aladyintexas (verified owner) –
The 1st day my dog opened the door & got out simply by pushing down on the top release. The 2nd day the spring broke as I was closing the door. I ordered the 4 way replacement door to see if that will work but not happy that I’m having to invest another $40 in this already expensive kennel.
ASHABOO20 (verified owner) –
My dog broke out of it within 5 minutes of being in there once I left.
Morgan5678 (verified owner) –
The first time I left my dog in this for 3 hours he chewed a hole through the side of the kennel. He is about 50 pounds and get anxious, but it’s not very sturdy for the amount of damage caused in 3 hours.

This is my second kennel and love them so much! Will but again if we need another kennel

I bought this crate for travel and it came late, and when it came it had scuffs and marks all over it. It also came without a handle, which was in the photo of the product i ordered. it was clearly either used or a return that had been knocked around. because i needed it immediately, i’ve used it and don’t want to go through the bother of returning it. the box it came it was a patched together box and can’t be reused anyway.

I bought this kennel to transport my 72-pound German Shepard back home. The trip was at least 13 hours long. To my amazement, the kennel did exceptionally well, and so did Sam.
It was readily available, very affordable, and reliable.
Linrarc (verified owner) –
This was bought to replace a Petmate Kennel that only lasted one week as the dog broke it trying to get out when we were outside. The plastic shattered, but the gate was not bent. So far the new one is holding up, but we never leave the dog in it if we leave home and she cannot see us. We ended up ordering a very thick plastic one that will be stronger and safer to leave her in if we need to go outside the house.
Finn B (verified owner) –
Perfect fit for 70 pound yellow lab with enought room to grow.
MDennis (verified owner) –
Good size for my 8 week old lab (13 lbs). Seems pretty secure and he is comfortable in it. I wish it had a 2 sided gate opening function so that I could secure it open to his playpen from either side of the playpen, or remove the gate altogether during playpen time. With the current set up, the bolts need to be removed to remove the gate. The handle is a great perk as well.
Partera (verified owner) –
The kennel is good so far. The door opens & closes easily. It is working out well for my dog (30# Australian Shepherd).
NanLV (verified owner) –
We bought this for our 12 pound rescue to help her feel safe and comfortable when left alone since she had been exhibiting anxiety. It is large enough that she is comfortable and has room to turn around and live flat, but it seems to be helping her stay calm. Also, there is nothing sharp she can hurt herself l

My little Maggie loves her new home! She jumped right in.
Vincent E (verified owner) –
I have owned this for quite some time now. I love the way it looks and my dog will only be fine when he’s in a hard shell kennel(feels homey for him compare to a cage). I wanted something sturdy and was willing to pay a good price on a kennel(you pay what you get). Turns out the more I pay the better was quite the opposite. My dog does have anxiety issues and does not like to be alone so he would try to break out of the kennel. There has been times where I find my dog outside the kennel and I was completely confused. I gave a reasonable doubt that it was the operators fault for not locking it properly. This has been an ongoing issue and it wasnt the operator but the kennel itself. My dog is able to unlock the kennel on his own! I thought this was dog proof. So one day I was going to go get dinner and left my dog in the kennel placed a hard surface near the gate so he cant break free, so he doesnt destroy my apartment. 2 hours later I come back and I was going to let my dog out, later finding out my dog tore the upper and lower part of the kennel and I’m pretty sure he ate some since I cannot find the rest of the part that tore off. I’m kind enough to give 2 stars for the look and how much my dog loves the crate where he would hangout in there in his own will but this kennel is pointless when your dog can break free and or tear the kennel up on their own. Here is some pictures as proof. Do not buy this. Such a waste of money, just buy a metal kennel so your dog wont break the kennel and or eat it. I really thought this thing was durable….

This kennel is a piece of junk, after1 hour my 50 lb dog was able to chew the plastic thats near the door and pull in and bend door in. If i could give zero stars i would.
MRBONO (verified owner) –
The pins to lock the door did not line up with the holes so I had to take pliers and bend them a little bit… the plastic cover on the latches fell off and set on our table for two days as we did not know where it came from.

I bought this crate for my Beagle. She fits in it perfectly. Easy assembly. Love the side vents.

I have a female military macaw who isn’t a destructive chewer. To be totally honest, this crate was the only one available in the store that would accommodate her tail. So we bought it, installed a perch and she was happy enough. I’m not sure it’s worth what they charge but it’s okay for us. The door definitely isn’t so secure a dog can’t escape. I can see how people’s dogs get out so easily.
JudyM9 (verified owner) –
The 36” crate is only 36” if you count the plastic extension around the crate. The crate itself, and the interior, is only 30”. As that’s too small for my dog, I will be returning it.
Anonmymous (verified owner) –
This kennel is well built. All my dogs are trained at a young age to be happy in a crate. A dog with anxiety or destructive behavior would not be contained within it but that is not what it is meant for.
P78M (verified owner) –
I needed a bigger kennel for my Mini Aussie. She sleeps in it at night and needed more room to stretch out. This works fine for her. She is happy so I am happy.

This is the second Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel I have bought. My other kennel is over 30 years old and is still like new. The new kennel is the same length but is taller than the old. The quality seems to be just as good. I have one kennel on the main floor and the other upstairs. My dog loves his kennels.
MyDogCallsMe Mommy (verified owner) –
I had this crate for less than 24 hours and my dog let himself out. I’m not sure if the latch was malfunctioning before I purchased it but it definitely did not stay latched after I purchased it. I returned it for a refund. It looks great, just wasn’t the best material.
Travler in need (verified owner) –
This worked fantastic for transport of two puppies o the airplane
RubyDoobyDoo (verified owner) –
We had to upgrade a size as our pup had outgrown the other one we had. She’s very tall for a medium-sized dog and this gives her room to stretch out.
I also like that it’s not a metal crate like the other one we had because she got her head stuck in the open top of that one. This one is sealed and secure and gives her more space. Overall, it’s pretty good. 4 stars instead of 5 because the lower latch gets stuck and won’t lock into place sometimes. Doesn’t affect usage but a little annoying at times.
robynsti (verified owner) –
I have a Husky/Lab mix who is 1 1/2 years old. He is a rescue and is house trained as well as crate trained. We bought this crate so he can stay at home occasionally when I need to go somewhere without him (normally he can go to my husband’s store with me). My dog has been able to “escape” this crate every time I have put him in it. He is able to bend the door by either pushing out or pulling it in. I have zip-tied the door but he still is able to force it open. The first time the latching mechanism actually came apart. I have pictures of the front plate and spring on my living room floor from where they came apart. We were able to put it back together but he can still get out. I do not recommend this crate if you have a very strong dog. I spent a lot of money on this crate and am so disappointed that it is not as strong as advertised.
Redneckwelder50 (verified owner) –
Bought this for my female German Shepherd. She has managed to escape multiple times. The door is extremely weak and she can bend the metal door pins. This kennel would be much better if it was built with thicker gauge steel for the door.
Rockyrego (verified owner) –
Excellent product. So well made and comfortable for my corgi. It’s the perfect fit.
watercolorarteest (verified owner) –
We bought this to keep a stray dog temporarily for a fostering situation. The dog, well tempered is pure chaos when it comes to crates. This crate may have been too big for him and I don’t know how he did it (unless there was an invisible hairline fracture damage in the plastic of the crate); but he busted out a small area of the corner of the top of the crate the first night. He’s managed to chew off the METAL of the side vents and he’s been gnawing on the plastic that abuts the door. And this was after he tore apart our own dog’s wire crate.
Dogownerfor60years (verified owner) –
The packaging of the kennel causes the top of the kennel to be scratched because NO padding is place been the metal door and hardware. I will return the kennel and purchase from a different firm.
DogZillaDad (verified owner) –
I’ve had my XL for several years (7 or 8?) and my 107lb European Doberman loves it. I know – she’s bigger than what the size recommends – but when she grew larger than expected I bought an XXL 48 inch carrier and she hated it. After a couple of months of it sitting in the garage and her diving into it anytime the garage door was opened – I put it back into the house and sold the XXL. The XL fits on the floor in my Crew Cab when the back seat is up – and she rides in it a lot because we travel a lot and she is destructive if left alone. She sleeps in it every night – and if she senses someone on our front porch then she turns into something like a sci-fi movie monster. I think it has more wear from me dragging it around than from her though. She’s never escaped – even when locked in it at a campsite while freaking out because someone else walked over. She had a litter of pups a few months ago, and I’m keeping one – so I came to get another carrier. I can’t understand the reviews where people say their dog chewed through the door (some of the pictures show damage that couldn’t have been done with the door closed – and some seem more like a human was at fault. A friend of mine left his on his back patio when we had freezing rain and sleet overnight. It froze to the cement, and when he kicked it to break it loose it cracked. So I wouldn’t suggest using it in freezing conditions, or let it warm up if you bring it in from a shed before letting your dog jump in.

Crate is ok… but 1 day after I brought it home our yellow lab had knocked the door off… it does not secure that well so if you have a bigger dog who likes to be out… beware…
