Transition Instructions:
We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old dietwith 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. The size of the “nuggets” is quite large compared to the food I had been giving my dog and it took him a while to get used to the size. I learned from my vet that these nuggets are designed to be this size to prevent the dogs from gulping their food. I think it’s effective. I no longer need to use the Slow Feed Bowl.

I don’t care for the size of kibble– it’s very large and our dog never chews it, she just swallows the chunks whole!! The feeding instructions seemed a bit vague as well–I wasn’t sure if I was to add water to the kibbles or not. The bag feeding instructions came in three languages, but never specified exactly. They need to be more exact. The ingredients don’t appear to be very healthy with the first few ingredients being brown rice, chicken “by-product” meal, oat groats, and brewers rice, wheat, corn gluten meal… where is the protein? This was very concerning. Our girl does appear to really like this food, but I have to wonder how nutritional it is when no solid protein is listed in the first few ingredients!? It appears to be rather expensive to not have protein listed as its first ingredients. I’m not sure if I could in good faith purchase this food again or recommend this food to other golden pet parents due to these facts.

I don’t like Duke to have anything that chicken by products and fat are the only meat source, corn gluten meal and wheat gluten don’t sound very healthy either. I switched to Royal Canin (from Blue) a couple of months ago at the recommendation of my Vet. So glad I did, as I have seen an incredible difference in my 8 year old Golden. The new puppy Ollie was eating Royal Canin so we decided to give it a shot for both dogs. Cami had been experiencing hair loss on her back for several years and we tried a couple things to grow it back to include thyroid medicine – nothing worked. This food is quite pricey and yet the first ingredient is corn and the second is chicken by product. I looked up what that is and you definitely don’t want to feed it to your dog. Golden Retriever couldn’t wait to try the Royal Canin Adult Golden Retriever Breed Health Nutrition. He can be picky, but he ate the whole dish, and left the tv remote alone!
When the store is out of his usual dog food, he often tastes a different brand and leaves it in the bowl for a while without eating it. He had a hard time sitting still for his photo with the bag and kept trying to open it. Once dinner was served, Theo ate every bit of Royal Canin Golden Retriever food and started looking around for leftovers. It was a great hit. The kibble size was huge compared to his other food. It slowed him down, had lots of crunch, and didn’t have a weird smell when I opened the bag, as some other brands do!
I will be adding this to his shopping list and recommending it to my cousin who breeds Goldens.
I like that the food is made for our dog breed. And that it will help improve his diet!

I rescued her from a puppy mill. She was 8 years old, breed puppies from she could. She chewed her way out of her wire kennel, lost her canine tooth right side & escaped into the near by forest. After a few days of adjusting to the new food, their poop tells me everything I need to know. They are pooping fewer times each day and less is coming out. This dog food has more nutrients to absorb and less waste to get out. As a dog mom, this makes me feel so good to know I have finally found a healthy dry dog food!!!!

I also read one of your responses to a review left about not using any additives. However; one of the ingredients is sodium silico aluminate, and another one listed is fructooligosaccharides. When I googled sodium silico aluminate, the first sentence on several websites calls this an additive, and fructooligosaccharides is a sugar substitute. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Had been feeding a competitor’s grain-free formula because I thought that was “better.” Then FDA warnings about diet-related DCM came out…apparently there has been a marked increase in Taurine deficient (diet-related) dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs that have been on grain-free & unique protein diets. Dogs on Royal Canin Golden Retriever food have been testing with good Taurine levels. Royal Canin has testing & proven formulas! After 1-week, my Golden’s coats feel more silky & they seem to have more energy. So glad we made the switch to Royal Canin!

Every breed is different so it’s nice to know that my dog is getting all the nutrients specific for him. I have seen this at my local veterinarian office which means it is trusted by my dog’s vet. But after going over the ingredients and comparing it to current food, decided not to continue. It does not offer any benefit specific to Golden Retrievers, just a run of the mill adult grain dog food.

Normally, she’s a little hesitant when it comes to new things, but it didn’t take her as long as normal to come and try the food out. I didn’t notice any issues or anything. She handled the texture well and didn’t notice any excessive crumbs around her bowl or anything stuck in her teeth afterwards. No funny poops when I take her outside for her to do her business. I wouldn’t mind buying this food again in the future, but it is just so expensive.

My friend who works at royal canin spoke to a vet she sells to who suggested the gastrointestinal dry puppy food. Once my dog, Maverick, started on this food, all of his problems ceased. I have since eased him into the golden retriever dry puppy food and now the golden retriever dry adult food. I am so happy to say Maverick is the happiest and healthiest, and CUTEST most athletic friendly golden retriever there ever was- all thanks to Royal Canin!

We have two Golden Retrievers. One is a puppy and one an adult. The breeder of the puppy highly recommended the Royal Canin product and we have been giving our puppy the product and decided to switch our adult over to the Royal Canin. Both dogs love the food and we are glad we made the switch.

I definitely love that this product is breed specific I know what I’m getting with it when I go to purchase it and that brings me a peace of mind.
