DESCRIPTION

Bearded Dragons are named for their “beards,” or the spiny skin under the throat that puffs up when they’re excited or frightened. Among the most social reptiles to keep as pets, they are a good choice even for beginners who haven’t previously owned a reptile. Learn more about these fascinating creatures, their behaviors, and how to care for them in the sections below.

Expected Size: Bearded dragons can grow up to 24 inches (61 cm).

Lifespan: Bearded dragons live approximately 10 years.

Vet Assured: Pets purchased at PetSmart are part of our exclusive Vet Assured program, designed by PetSmart veterinarians to help improve the health and well-being of our pets. Our vendors meet a high standard in caring for pets and screening them for common illnesses, including Zoonotic diseases. This program also includes specific standards for in-store pet care.

The PetSmart Promise: If your pet becomes ill during the initial 14-day period, or if you’re not satisfied for any reason, PetSmart will gladly replace the pet or refund the purchase price.

Safety tips for you and your pet:
1. ALL ANIMALS can potentially carry viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases contagious to humans. 2. Thoroughly wash your hands with
warm, soapy water before and after contact with any pet or its habitat. 3. Adults should assist children with hand washing after contact with a pet or its enclosure. 4. Use caution when handling pets, and remember they may bite or scratch, especially when stressed.

Feeding Instructions:
Young bearded dragons are omnivorous (approximately 50% insects and 50% plant matter). As they mature they will eat more vegetables and transition to mostly herbivorous (approximately 90% plant matter).

  • INSECTS: Feed gut-loaded insects (crickets or dubia
roaches) 1 time daily. Mealworms, superworms and waxworms should be offered in only small amounts. Dust food with a calcium/Vitamin D3 powder: 4-5 a week (juveniles); 2-3 times a week (adults). Dust food with a multivitamin 1 time a week (juveniles); 2 times a month (adults), or as directed by your veterinarian.
  • VEGETABLES: Fresh dark leafy greens, carrots, squash and peas can be offered daily.
  • FRUITS: Fruits like melons, berries and citrus may be offered 1 time a week.
  • PREPARED DIETS: Bearded dragon pelleted food, moistened with water, may be offered daily.
  • WATER: Cleaned daily and provided at all times

    Housing:
    Recommended pieces include:

  • 10-20 gallon terrarium or larger (adults require at least 40 gallons)
  • Screened lid
  • UVB blb and fixture
  • Basking bulb and lamp
  • Thermometer
  • Reptile carpet
  • Food dish>
  • Water dish (big enough for pet to soak in
  • Hygrometer-thermometer
  • Plants and decor
  • Basking site beneath heat lamp

    Terrarium Set-Up:

  • Reptile carpet or tile is best for bearded dragons. Remove droppings as needed. Clean at least every other week.
  • Bearded dragon terrariums require a temperature gradient (a cool side and a warm side). Add
thermometer(s) and a hygrometer to monitor temperature and humidity. Mist your bearded dragon daily with a warm water spritz to maintain humidity.
  • Reptiles require a 12-hour day/night cycle. A UVA/UVB bulb will help your bearded dragon absorb calcium.
  • Add driftwood or rock to climb a little closer to heat source. Add a few branches for hiding and climbing.
