Green Parakeets are clever and colorful birds that make fun and entertaining pets. These beautiful birds enjoy bonding with their pet parents and can even learn tricks, like “step up” and “step down.” Learn more about these fascinating birds, their behaviors, and how to care for them in the sections below.

Experience Level: Beginner

Expected Size: Parakeets grow up to 7 inches (18 cm) from head to end of tail.

Lifespan: On average, parakeets live for 7 to 10 years.

Behavior: Parakeets are social animals and thrive living in same-gender pairs and groups.

Temperament: These birds love to bond. Hold and play with your parakeet for at least 30 minutes every day.

Vet Assured: Pets purchased at PetSmart are part of our exclusive Vet Assured program, designed by PetSmart veterinarians to help improve the health and well-being of our pets. Our vendors meet a high standard incaring for pets and screening them for common illnesses, including Zoonotic diseases. This program also includes specific standards for in-store pet care.

The PetSmart Promise: If your pet becomes ill during the initial 14-day period, or if you’re not satisfied for any reason, PetSmart will gladly replace the pet or refund the purchase price.

Safety tips for you and your pet:
1. ALL ANIMALS can potentially carry viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases contagious to humans. 2. Thoroughly wash your hands with
warm, soapy water before and after contact with any pet or its habitat. 3. Adults should assist children with hand washing after contact with a pet or its enclosure. 4. Use caution when handling pets, and remember they may bite or scratch, especially when stressed.

  • 20% FRESH FOODS: Dark leafy greens, vegetables, fresh fruits and whole grains served every other day.
  • 5% TREATS: Honey sticks and millet spray make tasty treats; offer them once a month.

  • Choose at least 3 toys for your bird and rotate between them to keep playtime exciting.
  • Layer the bottom of the habitat with an appropriate liner and replace as needed.

I rescued these birds from abuse and I knew they were from PetSmart. They were afraid at first, and after a few days, they just came right on my finger! They’re the best, and I’m so happy!

I bought this budgie almost 2 weeks ago and my kiddos love seeing him every morning before school. It’s not been long enough for a solid bond to form but he’s becoming slightly less panicky when I go into his cage for cleaning or changing his food. He definitely likes millet spray! He’s been eating, drinking and pooping great. He has a few favorite perches to sleep on. We have a little going to be routine. He usually goes onto a chosen perch for the night and cleans himself right before puffing himself up and closing his eyes. He is always on the same perch when I uncover his cage in the morning. He’s so cute. I think he is adjusting really well to our home.

I purchased a green budgie from here and I love him so much! My experience with petsmart budgies is very good! They’re very healthy and well behaved! Although they are not hand tamed at the store they are easy to tame by nature, so this shouldn’t be an issue. I’ve had mine about 2 weeks now and he already lets me hold and cuddle him. The only thing I should advise is that if you want it’s wings clipped be sure to ask when you buy your bird, it’ll be safer (assuming this is your first bird) to let them workers take care of it, they know what they’re doing.

I bought this parakeet for my nephew as a gift. Im the one taking care of the bird and doing all maintenance but he loved it since he saw it. The bird was very calm at first it was scared in its new home and was very quiet but lately my nephew will talk to it and the bird will chirp back. It’s so cute to see how these two have bonded. The bird is very calm and seems to be more at ease now than the first few days.

I bought my budgies around 3 months ago AND THEY ARE SO ADORABLE. They bonded with me quicker than I thought. Though they are still timid, they are willing to go on my fingers alot. Kiwi’s my green male and Bubbles is my blue female. There is a slight problem. Petsmart sold us Bubbles as a male. But besides that everything is going great!

I had two girls and had to look for a new budgie after one died. There were two boys left and the worker said they were a bonded pair. I was offered the second one half off if I purchased both. The boys are curious about everything (including my remaining female) and are only a little shy towards me. Their chirps are beautiful and I couldn’t be happier.

The budgies are awesome, my only concern is how the workers don’t have a relationship with them and instead just resort to using the net or grabbing them. This has made training him so much harder.

It has been less than 2 weeks and already this little bird has positioned itself as the head of household. When the cat gets too close – a spray of seeds is slapped out of his cage. When my son invites him to a game of chess – he cheats if you don’t watch. And yesterday he whistled at my wife as she walked by. Like “whistled” whistled. Couldn’t have asked for a more fun fella.

My budgie (who wasn’t from pet smart) is the best there amazing pets strongly suggest you get one. There are many upsides to them they average $40 there poops are smaller then your pinky nail and there for to watch. Ok here’s the warning i was telling you about Don’t get one at petsmart ok they are not tame they will bite and they are too old to learn how to speak get one at a breeder how Hand Feeds and if you have kids make sure the breeder has exposed them to kids or else the bird will see a kid and thin aaak a crazy monster is coming i must fight back… and then the kid gets bit. Hope this helped bye

I bought my two babies about a month ago. I got one green parakeet, one blue. That was the best choice I have ever made! They are perfect! I’m so glad they are a part of my life now. I had heard that the parakeets from Petsmart were wild and untamed. It is true that, at first, my birds were skittish and nervous. But that’s only because they were in a new, scary place without their other little birdie friends. No animal is untamable, no animal is hopeless. If you show them love, they will return it. Be patient, and let them take their time to get used to you. They will light up your world!

I got her on a Wednesday afternoon and lost her on a Saturday. Barely any time to get her to her first vet appointment. My heart is broken. Pretty outdated and sad that they only kept them on seeds and a small amount of freeze dried bits of veg with overcrowded enclosures where they were unable to fly or naturally move. No animal deserves the significantly smaller and unhygienic display cases that petsmart deems acceptable.

my sister had two parakeets, blue and green, one of them used to pick on the blue ones cear, after one of them died 🙁 I took over the green one and he was really depressed, (both boys) a couple years later i still had my green bird, he was still mean, but i LOVED him. I made him toys, treats, i played with him, (i used to call him “pretty bird”) but a couple months ago we went on a vacation to orange beach alabama (warm climate) and i was already down there. MY parents had just come down with my sisters and parakeet, my mom said the bottom of the cage fall out and he flew on to a palm tree and flew away. Does anyone know how i can train them? (i want another one) please help me?!

I got a healthy, green parakeet on my birthday four years ago, I still have him and he is a little skittish because he was paying more attention to our other parakeet than me. So he was understandably a bit nervous. But now I’ve separated them and started working with him he’s friendly now, but still a little flighty. I named lance, overall a nice, fun pet!

I bought my two budgies, a blue fancy parakeet named Bubbles and a sweet little green parakeet named Kiwi. They are both males but I feel that Kiwi is more suited to my family. He’s much more active and is being finger trained much quicker. Bubbles is more quiet and less comfortable around my family but he’s adjusting. Before rushing off to buy them, I must say that the are not just bring home and neglect pets. They require plenty of care. I do not mean to discourage you from buying these birds. They are wonderful pets, but if you do not have the time or energy, don’t buy them and neglect them. I absolutely love my budgies. They are quite playful and are very healthy. I LOVE MY BUDGIES. They are just as lovely as before and began chirping and playing around on the second day, started climbing on my hand with the help of some seeds 7th day. They get along so well with eachother, they sleep together, groom eachother, play with eachother, they bring food to eachother, everything. THESE ARE THE BEST PETS EVER.

I’ve wanted to get budgies again for awhile and finally did But unfortunately their wings were clipped when i got them. Wing clipping is an outdated practice and the yellow one almost hurt himself trying to fly off his perch earlier because he didnt realize he couldnt. They are not tame so I will have to tame them but they arent agressive by any means. Aside from the clipped wings they’re good.

Free is so amazing She still needs a little time to fully overcome her fears but overall she is coming outside of her cage and go back in when she’s ready she is so smart she already knows her schedule bedtime. She is eat well and moving her bowls regularly. She took two bird showers since she been here. So Delightful to have as apart of my family. She’ll sit on top of her roof top until she ready to go in.

I love my green boi alot (His name is Tutti-Frutti) But they are VERY hard to hand tame. Its been about 8 weeks since we got my fellas, but neither of them like to step up for longer than 5 seconds. Although, I do think they are pretty tame due to the fact he will eat almost anything out of my hand. I personally wish they could be hand tamed much easier but, I guess it’s what I get for getting ‘em at petsmart! ;3

I bought this green and yellow baby parakeet 10 days ago and it is doing very well. It has a good appetite, preens itself, chirps, and plays with its toys and its companion parakeet. It was very fearful at first, but is getting more relaxed. I play parakeet sounds from Facebook for it every day for it. I am waiting a while before letting it out of the cage or trying to finger train it.

I bought our green budgie (parakeet) from petsmart 9 years ago, and he is a valued member of our family. He is a lone budgie, so we keep him in our living room, he has learned to say several phrases, and imitates my laugh perfectly. He even seems to notice when I am about to laugh and will do it at the same time. He can also whistle the Andy Griffith show theme. We keep his wings intact, *always be sure to cover windows*, and let him out to fly every other day. Still going strong at 9, we love him so much!

Cute bird the price is fair but other things are not like clipping the birds wings which they shouldn’t do that for any reasons ,also workers in the store don’t know if your buying a male or a female so if your buying two birds whatever your pick is you might be ending up with two females or two males , Oh almost forgot, when you ask them if they are males or females they answer males, no females, at least say we don’t know

The birds look healthy, I noticed when I got mine home it favored one foot more and saw that it’s foot was a little deformed. Only uses one claw on it while the others are fully closed and stays sideways. Other than that love my little guy (Kiwi) had him standing on my finger the next day, he seems to be avquick learner. Had him standing on my finger eating spray millets while rubbing his belly on 3rd day. I hope his foot doesn’t bother him in future, so far its not stopping him from climbing and sitting on perches or fingers. Love my little Kiwi

Some of you are really wanting a bird. Can you have one? Now that`s the question. If you would like to possibly get a bird you will need some things first. You will need to know what type of bird, where the bird is going to go, and how to take care of it. You will need to know all about birds. Like for example-You will need to know how much time to take your bird out.Things also like- how much to feed your bird.(3-4 tablespoons a day) To be really prepared you will need to plan at- least one month ahead. So try to find out all of the information you need to get a loyal trusting bird.

Five and a half weeks ago, I bought a green budgie. He looked mature in the sense that his head fathers were fully developed, but was not fully mature because his eyes still look all black and because his wings are mostly solid yellow. I got him at around 8 PM, and by the next morning he was out of his cage, comfortable, and I even got him to step onto my finger, all less than 24 hours after getting him. Four weeks after buying Turbo, I returned to Petsmart to get him a buddy. I picked out a younger looking bird that was noticeably smaller than Turbo, and although Ibthought he was a boy because of his whitish-blue cere, I now know it’s still at a point where its color could go either way and it could be a boy or a girl. I’ve had him(I still think of him as a boy) for 1.5 weeks now, and he’s still afraid of me. My other bird won’t step up onto my finger outside of his cage without flying off to be with his friend, unless I put the younger one in his own cage and take him all the way down to the basement where they can’t hear each other’s chirps. I’m mostly certain that this weekend I will take him back. He has negatively affected my bond with my first bird, and I think I will trade him in for a finch. My advise: pick a mature one as your first, and if you ever want to get another then go for another mature one.

I got my budgie from PetSmart about a week ago… While I was in the store I noticed ALL of the bids in there except the canaries and finches had the wings clipped….. Clipped conures…. Clipped parakeets…. This is very bad for the mental health of the bird as they use flight to avoid predators in the wild and although these are domesticated birds they still take a heavy mental hit when they are clipped. Flight feathers can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to molt back in to perfection! Please STOP clipping the birds and STOP asking breeders to clip wings before you get them to throw into a tiny glass box for sale. Its really not hard to transport a flighted bird you just have to use more caution. If you are looking for a bird please look at the main wing and see if there are at least 5 feathers extending back to the birds tail…. Those are flight feathers and if they are clipped your bird cannot fly and will fall to the floor if they try…

When I was a little girl I had a green budgie (parakeet) just like the one pictured. I don’t remember if he died or if my mom sold him, but I knew someday I would get another one. Well, last August I had enough money saved to be able to purchase one. I named him Spock, and he was very shy in the beginning. I tried to hand tame him, but in trying to do so I learned how little time I had to devote to him. Which saddened me. It would have been nice to have a tame bird but I wanted him happy, my happiness wasn’t as important. So now I have four budgies in total. Each have their own distinctive personality. All boys, all rambunctious. Spock is ten times happier than he was. He has such an attitude, like he knows he was here first and reminds the other three. They get along just fine though, little arguments here and there but nothing severe.
When purchasing a budgie be prepared for a lot of work. You will be cleaning seeds off the floor, vacuuming a lot. They require out of the cage time. I open the cage and off they fly around my room, chill on/in their cage for a few hours. Give them treats sparingly, don’t want chubby/unhealthy birds. Switch around their toys keep them stimulated. They don’t require bathes but do enjoy them. Watching them bathe is fun. They are delicate and scare easily so be very soft and slow around them. Also, they love to chew on paper, I have a poster with bird bites in it to prove that. So I give them bits of paper to chew on, they LOVE it.

While I love my three lil birdies Sweet, Tweet, and Peep, they are very hard to train. I’ve had them for a year now, and they still haven’t warmed up to me that much. Peep thinks my finger is a toy and keeps biting me. Sweet will screech at you life you even bring your finger near her. Also btw I can’t include a photo, but Peep is a green/yellow male, Tweet is a blue/white male, and Sweet is a recessive pied female. (so basically white with splotches of color) Although, they were very healthy when I got them and look very happy together. I recommend getting them a pretty big cage for them to fly in. And make sure their diet doesn’t consist just of seeds, but of cuttlebone, maybe fruit, mineral blocks, eggs, etc. Get them toys so they won’t get bored. And for the bottom of the cage you can put pet litter on the bottom or special parakeet paper. Don’t put newspaper there cuz they might accidentally eat it. And don’t get toys with small beads or stuff that they might break off and swallow. The employees were pretty nice. You won’t need to trim their beaks if you give them cuttlebone also. It also helps file down their nails. If you want your bird to be able to fly freely, don’t clip their wings. Mine have clipped wings because I don’t want them to escape, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you are careful. I tried to cover everything, sorry if I missed something.
