DESCRIPTION

Replicate a natural desert environment for your reptilian pet with Thrive Desert Natural Calcium Sand. This
terrarium calcium sand substrate bedding for bearded dragons and more allows your reptile to dig and burrow as he would in nature, and is gentle on the skin as well. Only at PetSmart.

Features:

  • Reptile calcium sand
  • Great for digging and burrowing
  • Gentle on reptile skin

    Includes: 20 lb of Sand

Intended Pet(s): Adult reptiles including Bearded Dragons, Uromastyx, Leopard Geckos, Sand Boas, Greek Tortoises and Tarantulas

    Material(s): Sand

    Color: Tan

Product Weight: 20 lb (9 kg)

  • Directions:
Evenly spread 2 inches of sand on the floor of the terrarium. A 2-3-inch depth is recommended for large pets. Use a sand sifter to scoop waste daily. Completely replace the substrate monthly or as needed. If waste material is allowed to collect on the surface, your pet can develop skin and intestinal infections. A clean environment will help you protect the health of your pet.

Care Instructions: Discard waste daily. Completely replace the substrate monthly or as needed.

Caution: Sand substrate is only safe for adult reptiles. Not recommended for juvenile lizards under 6 inches (15 cm) in total length. While natural calcium sand can be ingested, you should seek immediate veterinary care if your pet consumes large quantities of the substrate or if there is a change in food or water consumption. Excess consumption can cause intestinal impaction, which can be harmful. Observation and proper management will minimize potential problems.

Advice for Use: Refer to a pet-care guide to determine the proper substrate for your pet. Feeding your pet from a plate or bowl within the enclosure will help reduce accidental substrate ingestion. Wash your hands after handling a pet or cleaning a habitat.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great product but I prefer something that is safe just Incase of accidental ingestion. I prefer to use crushed walnut. This is a good sand but you have to make sure they do not invest it while eating bugs

This is great for my terrarium. I was using an artificial mat for the first year and a half but now that I have all sand it seems like my lizard is enjoying his surroundings more. If our store ever gets more in stock I would love to get more because I don’t have enough to give him enough to do the digging he wants to do.

This is awful I can’t honestly can’t believe they sell this IT KILLS REPTILES! It is NOT “natural” personally I have never used it but so many reptiles have died because of this TAKE IT OFF THE MARKET NOW!

Sand can cause impaction if digested by the reptile which most often ends in death. Please, for the health of your pet, DO. NOT. BUY. SAND!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use coconut fiber as bedding for my mice, because one has an allergy to conventional bedding. It’s so soft compared to eco-earth, I’m actually really impressed with this. They seem to enjoy it and it looks so natural.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Trive Coconut Soil Bedding is so soft and fluffy, works great for nesting or humidity boxes. My 2 female crested geckos got this in their nest boxes and though they can’t say it, I think they like it better than the clumpy, stick filled, potting soil they were using! 10/10 would recommend!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This sand is super fine, the photo I supplied is an extreme zoomed in photo. The sand looks very natural, it’s easy to dig in and borrow. There is a lot of sand in this bag and so I only needed one bag. This sand is for adult reptiles.

Believe it or not this bag of calcium sand was 20$ and some change Def money well spent unlike buying the smaller bags couple at a time to comfortably cover. The bottle of his temp enclosure I had been spending double

The texture is fine, there’s no odor, it’s easy to clean and absorbs onto the mealworms easily. I apply it to my chameleons food and they can’t wait to eat it up!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I never used actual sand in my leopard gecko’s terrarium before this. As a juvenile, she was on Repti-carpet, and I transitioned her to finely ground walnut shells when she got older out of fear she would accidentally ingest some of the bedding and develop health complications from something not digestible. She has really been enjoying this sand for a change! She spent hours just walking around after we made the swap. She tends to have issues with sheds sticking to her toes, so I am hopeful the coarser texture will help her get those little bits off. She even gets around well on it with her three legs. Will most likely keep her on this for the foreseeable future unless we notice issues further down the road.

DO NOT USE CALCIUM SAND! It causes impaction in reptiles and impaction is NOT good. It is a terrible product that you should never use for any reptile. I’m pretty sure it’s ok for hamsters. If you want more information on why calcium sand is bad for reptiles I recommend watching Leopard Gecko on YouTube.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Let’s start off by saying I LOVE how soft and silky this sand is. On top of being a really good price for the quantity it’s also gentle on our Beardies skin. The bag it came in wasn’t made cheaply and is strong and won’t tare easily making it easy for storage. And there’s no scent which is great.

I’m not sure about other reptiles but in my experience with leopard geckos this is a terrible substrate to use. The calcium in the sand encourages geckos to eat it, this is a problem as they CANNOT digest the sand and it will build up in their stomaches and eventually lead to death. DO NOT USE THIS!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received the Thrive Desert Natural Calcium Sand from Influenster for free for an unbiased and honest incentivized review. So far, so good! We have an adult bearded dragon who is 1-2 years old and he seems to like the sand just fine! I was lazy and instead of cleaning out the mossy old filler we had, I just poured the sand over top. It surprisingly laid really well and covered the old stuff. It has also stayed in place well. It hasn’t been messy or dusty at all!! I also haven’t noticed a scent. We’ve had it in the tank a few weeks now. The 20lb bag was large and covered the entire bottom of our large, custom built terrarium. We even had sand left over. Our bearded dragons skin has done fine with it as well. I love that it has stayed in place well and that it isn’t messy. I would definitely recommend it. The pictures I’m attaching show when I started to cover the old substrate with the sand and also when the covering was complete. I added the picture with the sunglasses to show the size of the 20lb bag.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been using Thrive Desert Natural Calcium Sand for my bearded dragon, and it’s fantastic! The texture is perfect—not too fine to cause dust issues but soft enough for my dragon to feel comfortable digging and lounging. I also appreciate that it’s calcium-based, which provides added safety compared to other sands in case of accidental ingestion.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently tried Thrive Pet Calcium Sand for my reptile enclosure, and overall, it seems like a good product. The sand appears to be of good quality and offers great value for the amount you get. It’s easy to use, and the texture seems comfortable for my reptiles to walk on. However, I am not a veterinary professional, so I can’t speak to the specifics of the safety of this product. Some reptile owners have concerns about the potential for impaction with calcium sands, so I strongly encourage anyone considering this product to do their own research and consult with their veterinarian to ensure it’s safe for their pet.

DO NOT use this for leopard geckos like the packaging by advertises. I had it for less than a month with my gecko and he has sever impaction which caused him to have prolapse and hernia for pushing the sand out from the impaction. Please remove the leopard geckos from the packaging it is not safe to digest at all.

Hermit crabs need very deep substrate to burrow down in so I would definitely need a few bags. Im excited to keep using this product. I love that there is a hermit crab on the package because some people dont know what hermit crabs need so with this they should be able to tell! It also looks like you can use it for a bunch of different animals.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I gave this 1 star because I cant review it as I dont have a reptile that this is related to. It does smell good and I’m sure it works great for lizards, etc. But I have a turtle and he uses water only. My apologies for not being able to review this, but thank you for sending me this in full size to try out!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So easy to use!!! I use to the solid blocks. I will say that if you have a big tank you might need more than one! I use this for the third layer in my frogs tank. Can be used to create a great ecosystem.

Please don’t buy this terrible product! DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! I guarantee any actual care guide will tell you NOT to use calci sand. It causes impaction more often than not. If your thinking about buying this deadly substate, buy shelf liner (which is cheaper anyway) or even reptile carpet.

Never use any type of sand for your reptiles as they can eat it and DIE.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love this sand! I mix this sand with coco fiber for my bearded dragons tank. He loves to dig so this mixture gives him the ability to. Also this sand makes cleaning out the tank an easy process.

This will kill any of your reptiles, sand and calcium sand are non-digestable and can cause impaction, respiratory issues, and more for reptiles! Do not listen to anybody who says calcium sand is good. I will link a photo to show why calcium sand is so bad. (Not my photos)

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My bearded dragon, Baby, seems to be enjoying the new texture in his habitat. although I am keeping it on one side rather that using it for the entire layout. so far it seems to be working and I might be placing some through out the entire enclosure. Since it’s the first time testing this product I still have to keep a close eye to see how baby is doing with it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was given a complementary bag of Thrive coconut soil bedding to test by Influenster !
It came perfect timing, my corn snake, Alisaie, was due in for a substrate change! For her I do a mix of coconut soil and aspen shavings since she really loves to burrow. I provided a photo of the soil on the base of her terrarium to show it was actually used.
Normally i would buy these in bricks and would have to soak them to make them into dirt, and for Alisaie she really doesn’t need a ton of humidity (unlike her ball python sister Varian…)This bag came already loose soil so one less step for me!
I’m highly likely to buy this again, less work is always a plus for snake owners…
The last photo is the little scaly baby of honor, she got thirsty waiting on her routine house cleaning 😛
Again I would definitely reccomend this to other reptile owners, I love it so far and my girl is loving her hole digging time

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received my complimentary Thrive Calcium Sand and my bearded dragon loves it. I used to use the Zoo med and they are pretty comparable. I one time used the colorful sand and it died my dragons legs pink so now I just use the natural sand. The one thing I would love for the company to change is how dusty it is. No matter how gently I put the sand down it still rises up.

I don’t think petsupplycanada deserves to say anything for pets because this is just awful. Don’t even think about buying calcium sand because it is meant for reptiles to ingest and the sand will cause impaction wich is hard and expensive to get out. If that happens your reptile is probably going to die. Just don’t buy this product or anything from thrive.

if you have a bearded dragon do not use this. either use shelf liner or reptile carpet because this is not OK for a bearded dragon.

I bought this for my gerbils after not finding any other decent sand product for them.
Being that they’re also desert creatures, I’ve found this a great replacement for the dust which sometimes gets up their noses.
      Thanks petsupplycanada!

My pet really dug it, well I assume he really just did the same thing he always does. I would buy this product again in the future. I have a bearded dragon so they go through bottom fluff really fast.

This stuff causes impaction. It has been reported since the product first came out, and yet it is still sold, and suckers still buy it. If you are committed to using a loose substrate, do some research on SAFE substrates that are appropriate to your species. This won’t be it. Do not use it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this complimentary from Influenster for my honest review! My Gecko Lizard enjoyed his sand. I used a handful to spread amongst his moss to give him more of an outdoor/woodsy feel. The sand looks like it’ll absorb spilled water from his dish. The cleanup with th8s sand in his tank is going to be easy.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have a bearded dragon, and this is the only sand/bedding we use in his trarium. This is the closest thing we have found that is closest to his natural habitat. It doesn’t get clumpy and seems to absorb moisture. It doesn’t smell like other brands.
