[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have used Nutro Large Breed & Large Breed Senior for my two rescued black Great Danes over the past 11+ years and I have to say that I recommend Nutro to everyone who asks me how I kept my dogs so healthy and to live such a long happy life.
Molly my female was from western Wisconsin and severely under weight at about 68 pounds at the age of 2 years old. With Nutro Large Breed Adult she was able to get to her target weight of 122 pounds in about 24 months. She passed on October 2009 at the age of 13 years and 2 months. My male Brewser I rescued from Salt Lake City, Utah at the age of 2 years old and 191 pounds due to a diet of table scraps and poor quality dog food. With a Nutro diet (no exercise because he had heartworms) I was able to get him to his target weight of 168 pounds in about 11 months. He passed away in February of 2011 at the age of 11 years and 7 months. With a warm loving home, regular Veterinaryian care and a balanced diet of Nutro Max Large Breed and Large Breed Senior my two dogs lived amazingly long happy lives. From what I have read and been told a Dane life expectancy is about 7 to 9 years.
Thank you Nutro for making a truly superior product. I also foster a 8 year old (from our local no-kill animal shelter) a Golden Retriever / Springer Spaniel mix for the last 7 + months and he has gained some pep in his step from being on Nutro too. I was hearbroken to find out from my vet last week that my beloved Holly, is now considered a senior. She had been eating Lamb and Rice for Large Breed. for 5 years. I went to two local stores searching for the L&R Senior, I couldn’t find it at either store.The store rep suggested I try the chicken version. We were feeding our black Lab and our German Shorthaired Pointer Nutro large breed, but we switched to the food our vet uses at the boarding kennel for a while. Our Lab started gaining too much weight and our GSP started losing! This is the opposite of what we wanted. I switched them both to Nutro Large Breed Senior food and things are so much better. They stopped eating their usually food until they got really hungry so they were eating every other day at most. I started shopping around trying to find something they would eat everyday. She was starting to have trouble with steps, getting up and laying down, and sometimes running after the mailman. After a visit to a pet store, the rep convinced me that the ingredients in Natural Choice were superior to what I was feeding her. I bought a bag, and within a short period of time she was running, playing, getting up and down like a dog half her age, and back to chasing the mailman — who was really her friend. She passed away February 16 of this year at age 16. The vet remarked how well she had aged, even though her body was starting to shut down due to age. I truly believe that the Natural Choice Senior food gave me a few more years of quality life for her. I am greatful!

I brought her to an outdoor gathering where many others had their dogs. She ended up “pairing up” with a 5 month old English Bulldog. They were running around like crazy, and Bianca was not only keeping up with the puppy, she was tuckering the poor thing out! She had a “smile” on her face as she raced around the yard – in the snow. Everyone complimented me on how soft her coat is and how healthy she is for a 7 1/2 year old dog. I think your product has a lot to do with her good health.

I have 3 dogs that have been on nitro essentials senior for about 3 years. The lab mix has been not eating or snubbing the food for the last 6 months or better. I thought it was behavioral some kind of hierarchy where she would eat after everybody ate. So she finally just stopped eating I put the food down in I would soak it and gravy nothing she just wouldn’t eat it anymore. After that third day I change the food and she has been eating every meal excitedly. Know my amstaff mix is vomiting bile and is having trouble eating the food. I don’t know if something changed in the formula these dogs are getting sick so I need to change her out as well. If my dogs are getting very sick from this there’s something wrong with the food.

Our dog was running all over the place. The man with the puppy seemed overwhelmed and asked my husband when do chocolate labs slow down. My husband looked over at our dog and said he’s 9. I’ve noticed that Shadow has gotten the bounce back in her step. She’s trimmed down, healthy, and acts like a playful pup. Hoosier’s coat is thicker and healther than ever. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] when we rescued our “mister” he was an eight scrawny pounds and very malnourished lab mix. we immediately put him on nutro puppy food and he began to grow like a weed! six months later, after surgery to repair his knee, the vet recommended we skip the adult food and go right to the senior food because of the glucosamine for his knee. five years later, after some other health issues, we were advised to put him on the nutro ultra holistic super food, but he didn’t like it as much, so we now feed him half senior and half ultra. he knows when it’s feeding time and will stand in front of his bowl until we put food in it. he’s now six years old and everyone we meet thinks he’s a a 100lb puppy! we have to watch his weight so he doesn’t reinjure his knee, and the senior food keeps him at his ideal weight. what a great food for our great big boy!

All my seniors have outlived their expected life span for their respective breeds. I’ve had a 100 lb. Bouvier des Flandres live 13 1/12 years, far beyond his 9 year life expectancy. Even his vet couldn’t believe how long he lived and how healthy he was. Quality of life is more than just eating and breathing – quality of life means being able to do what a dog enjoys most. Our 11 year old sheep dog refused to eat this food. Shortly after we started feeding it to her she began to constantly lick her paw and then she developed sinus congestion. We did not associate the food with the symptoms and would add juice from tuna fish or some shredded cheese to the food. She carefully picked out the cheese and left the Nutro. We finally stopped giving her the Nutro. Her paw licking stopped and her congestion is abating. She’s a smart dog and knows what is not good for her.

I have two Standard Poodles and they both have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). They are 9 and 12 years old – after switching to the Senior Large Breed food, they have been doing great. I doubt that I will ever take them off this food.
