DESCRIPTION

Cute and croaky Pacman Frogs feature large mouths and abdomens, and are named for their resemblance to the star of the ’80s arcade game. Native to South America, they are rare among frogs in that they have teeth. Pacman frogs are easy pets to care for, even for a beginning pet owner. Learn more about these fascinating creatures, their behaviors, and how to care for them in the sections below.

Experience Level: Beginner

Expected Size: Pacman frogs grow up to 8 inches (20 cm).

Lifespan: They live for approximately 10-15 years.

Habitat: Pacman frogs should be housed individually, and are nocturnal.

Caution: They are some of the only frogs with teeth and will bite if startled.

Handling: Pacman frogs do not like being handled.

Vet Assured: Pets purchased at PetSmart are part of our exclusive Vet Assured program, designed by PetSmart veterinarians to help improve the health and well-being of our pets. Our vendors meet a high standard in caring for pets and screening them for common illnesses, including Zoonotic diseases. This program also includes specific standards for in-store pet care.

The PetSmart Promise: If your pet becomes ill during the initial 14-day period, or if you’re not satisfied for any reason, PetSmart will gladly replace the pet or refund the purchase price.

Safety tips for you and your pet:
1. ALL ANIMALS can potentially carry viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases contagious to humans. 2. Thoroughly wash your hands with
warm, soapy water before and after contact with any pet or its habitat. 3. Adults should assist children with hand washing after contact with a pet or its enclosure. 4. Use caution when handling pets, and remember they may bite or scratch, especially when stressed.

Feeding Instructions:

  • GUT-LOADED INSECTS: Crickets and dubia roaches. Occasionally mealworms, superworms, waxworms and/or thawed frozen size-appropriate mouse.
  • Insects should be fed a gut-loaded (nutrient-dense) diet.
  • Dust food with calcium powder 2 times a week. Dust with a reptile multivitamin: 1 time a week (juveniles); 2 times a month (adults), or as directed by your veterinarian.
  • Feed your frog only enough food that can be consumed within 60 minutes. Remove uneaten food.

    Housing:

  • 10-gallon (18-20 inches long) terrarium, or larger
  • Screened lid
  • UVB bulb and fixture
  • Water dish (big enough for pet to soak in)
  • Reptile bark
  • Hygrometer-Thermometer
  • Plants and decor

    Terrarium Set-Up:

  • House your frog in a 10-gallon terrarium with a screened lid.
  • Line bottom of the terrarium with 2-4 inches of organic sphagnum and/or peat moss. Remove droppings frequently. Stir the bedding every other weekand change monthly.
  • Provide branches (artificial or live) for hiding. Pacman frogs are not very active and spend most of
their time waiting for food. Live plants help maintain humidity levels (consult resources on tropical frogs for a list of appropriate plants).
  • Equip the habitat with two thermometers, one at each end of the habitat, and a hygrometer to measure humidity. Use the chart, opposite, for target temperature ranges.
  • If necessary, provide supplemental heat with a heat light or under-tank heater.
  • Provide a shallow bowl of water large enough for your frog to sit in.
  • For more information, consult PetSmart’s “Reptile & Amphibian Heating & Lighting” and “Setting Up a Reptile or Amphibian Habitat” Care Guides.

He’s not my first Pac-Man, but he’s the smallest I’m not even sure they should be sold so small and young. Because of that he’s not the best eater, but he’s coming around to it. They included his little critter keeper enclosure which I haven’t moved him from for now until he’s eating well, but it had a lot of live crickets in it he hasn’t eaten which isn’t great since they will bite/eat your animal if left with them. But I know they don’t have the means to tong feed every animal so I’m not angry just a heads up for anyone else not to do that. My store is pretty good and my beardie and leopard gecko from there are doing decent so let’s hope he does too.

I personally haven’t bought a pacman frog but I know some information about them. Please do not handle them with just bare hands. They basically breathe through their skin, so If you handle them, only handle them for a little. I hope this is helpful! For more information look on YouTube for Taylor Nicole Dean, she has a pacman frog and provides very useful information.

So. I got a frog named Chub. The day I got him, I noticed dark red sores on his feet and groin and I realized he was suffering from red leg syndrome. I set up a vet appointment for a week later, on the day I got him. Unfortunately he died the day before his appointment. It was sad, he was just a baby. Inch and a half long. I went back 4 days later to a different located petsupplycanada and got my new frog, Poco. She’s nearly 6 inches long, not aggressive at all, and appears to be healthy. She’s very pleasant. So I have a lot of mixed thoughts on this breed. But I hope that my first experience was just very unlucky, because I love Poco and she’s more than just a good frog. 🙂

i have bought 2 of these frogs both from different store’s the first was a very small juv. second was a larger juv. and it has survived but it is a very aggressive frog and is only handled when in need of it he is fed live crickets via tweezers as they had him on pac attack and he refused to eat after the second month out of sheer desperation i went back to cricket’s ( im a mom to several different odd critters who eat crickets) and he started eating again he now is 5 inches around and very happy BUT still very grumpy and i payed 97$ for him and start up NOT NOT using them again!

I bought the Pacman Frog amost 2 weeks ago. It was for my son. Its name is Froggy Frog. I call it Hulk. 1st one I buy that has been very active and after a couple I have learned how to take care of it. Our goal for right now is to keep it health and always wet most of the time. Getting big enough to eat Pinkies. We have seen him eat several times which is new to me as the others we know ate but could not ever see it. Froggy Frog not shy. Awesome

Our little pacman frog seems to have settled in very nicely. One of the other reviewers mentioned how they eat from their hand… and this little guy is seriously domesticated. Only had him/her for a few days now, and I stick my hand in to feed, and it knows what’s going on and tries to take the food from my hand before I can even place it in the tank! So, as far as I can tell, it doesn’t have a problem with humans. Doesn’t show fear or anything, just burrows in the coconut fiber unless it sees my hand, in which case it starts sending its VERY sticky tongue in my hand’s direction to get at the food.

Peach schnapps was purchased on April 5th and he adapted fast. Hides and jumps out at 7am daily to eat. Hits glass when it’s name is called. I place my hand in terrarium and he jumps up my arm. I spritz the habitat and he runs to the water.

I bought one from this chain back in June; he is bigger and very spoiled. Mine hides in the coconut fiber most of the time; you only see him when he is hungry but he is easy to find in the dirt with gently handling through the dirt. He eats two medium size comet goldfish now every two or three days and is over three inches around. This frog is not normal but is proof they can be very friendly with proper care. He has became so spoiled he liked to be hand fed his food; literally held in your hand and rub under his chin to open his mouth and be hand fed his fish or super worms.
Remember frogs have sensitive skin so always wash your hands very well before and after handling them. He is held a few times a week and does like to be held. Not all frogs like attention and being held but gentle handling and getting them young like they are sold here and time. And in a few months you too can train a Pacman frog to be spoiled and tame as well. But all frogs will bite form time to time; even ours will grab a finger when hungry thinking it is food; because they have poor eye sight. Just remember not to pull away from them if they do bite; you will hurt their tiny teeth and do damage; just gentle persuade them to let go.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So, for Christmas I got a Pacman Frog named “Grogu”, sadly at the petsupplycanada we wasn’t cared for properly so when I got him he refused to eat, he passed about a week later. But, petsupplycanada gave me a new one now he lives happily and eats crickets and worms. Also my care was proper for the first one because my new one “Gama” is very happy with his tank, and is thriving.

      Although
Spends a lot of time in the substrate when he comes out he is always fast to jump after the food I give him.

This frog is healthy, lively (as an eater) and a crowd pleaser. My child loves him.

I have had this frog for almost a month and it is the greatest beginner amphibian/reptile out in the market. Feeding is simple yet fun. A very simple yet beautiful creature as well. It is very lovable as it is chubby and stout.

Peach schnapps was purchased on April 5th and he adapted fast. Hides and jumps out at 7am daily to eat. Hits glass when it’s name is called. I place my hand in terrarium and he jumps up my arm. I spritz the habitat and he runs to the water.

I wanted a frog that was easy to care for and didn’t need a huge tank. I went to petsupplycanada and fell for a Pacman frog. I bought Pacman that’s his name and am keeping him now in a Reptile Ranch Kritter Keeper. I feed him crickets every couple of days, feeder goldfish once a week and when he is older i’ll feed him frozen mice but only for a treat

Awesome

I got my frog a few weeks ago and named him grape, at first he would only eat crickets but he is eating mealworms now. I’m so glad I got him and he’s super easy to look after, he likes chilling in his substrate and water dish and he also likes eating.
